There are several breast cancer resources available to women thanks to recent awareness and education campaigns.

Surgery is the most common type of breast cancer treatment. In fact, most women undergo some type of operation to remove the cancerous tumor from their breast. If you just remove the tumor and surrounding tissue it's called a lumpectomy. Some women opt for a mastectomy, which is the removal of the breast and possibly of lymph nodes. The type of surgery depends on whether the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, and the stage of your breast cancer.

Typical breast cancer treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. These options can be performed separately, but are most commonly part of an integrated breast cancer treatment program. Many people have surgery to remove tumors, called a lumpectomy, and surgery to remove the entire breast and lymph nodes, called a mastectomy.

An early detection method of breast cancer is regular visits to your doctor for mammograms. All women over 40 should do this every year. This procedure identifies abnormalities and often leads to a biopsy to check for the presence of cancer cells. It is recommended that women with a high risk for breast cancer start getting mammograms and regular tests at a younger age.
